Position Title: Public Safety Officer

Department: Public Safety

Reports To: Reports To: Co-Directors of Public Safety, the Public Safety Captain and the Public Safety Sergeant

Work Hours: 40 hours

Status: Full-time; 12-Month Staff

FSLA Classification: Non-Exempt

Creation/Revision Date: December 2021

SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE*

  • Responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment within the College's buildings and grounds.
  • Assists in developing and recommending for approval policies, plans, programs, and procedures designed to enhance security within the college community
  • Checks and reads daily the Public Safety Bulletin and makes themselves aware of any special events or circumstances that are occurring within their area.
  • Secures all buildings and windows.
  • Admits authorized personnel only into buildings after they have been secured.
  • Works special details as required.
  • Assists and directs students, staff and visitors; furnishes information and instructions in an accurate, courteous manner.
  • Provides assistance to individuals who are sick or injured.
  • Prepares oral and written reports documenting all incidents and security breaches encountered.
  • Accurate completion of all departmental forms and reports.
  • Enforces parking policies and procedures.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Candidate must possess a High School Diploma.
  • Act 120 or 235 certification desirable.
  • First Aid, CPR and AED certification desirable.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to multi-task.
  • Must maintain a pleasant and professional manner.
  • Must display a good representation of the College.
  • Knowledge of security and law enforcement principles and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in a College environment.
  • Two-way radio and computer knowledge is helpful.
  • The Public Safety Officer is an hourly rate position.

SKILLS, ABILITIES, TRAINING, QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Higher Education experience Preferred
  • 1-3 years of related experience
  • Creative problem-solving skills

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment

  • Proficient with Microsoft® Office Products (especially Word and Excel)
  • Proficiency with Internet to use as resource, research and work tool
  • Good interpersonal skills – ability to work well with Faculty, Students and Staff
  • Excellent oral communication skills (i.e., ability to deal effectively with others; speak professionally on the phone, etc.)
